Biography

Larry D. Alexander (Ph.D., University of California at Los Angeles) is Associate Professor Emeritus of Strategic Management. Before joining the faculty at VPI & SU in 1981, he taught for three years at Oregon State University in Corvallis.  He has presented numerous papers before the Western Division of the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, Eastern Academy of Management, and the National Academy of Management.  Dr. Alexander has published articles in the Academy of Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Personnel Journal, Exchange, Proceedings of the Academy of Management, Journal of Management Case Studies, and Business and Society Review.  His chapter entitled "Strategy Implementation: Nature of the Problem" was just published in Hussy's International Review of Strategic Management.  In addition, his business strategy cases have appeared in numerous strategic management textbooks.  He is co-author of a textbook entitled Company and Industry Cases in Strategy and Policy.  His primary teaching interest is in the strategic management area at the undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. level.  Professor Alexander's research interests are in the areas of strategy implementation, how business strategy interfaces with human resource management, generic strategies, strategy communication, and how firms handle social issues.  He was chairperson of the Teaching Committee for the Business Policy and Policy Division of the Academy of Management for three years and more recently completed three years as that division's membership chairman.
