Biography

Devi R. Gnyawali got his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and is currently an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at the Department of Management, Virginia Tech.

Dr. Gnyawali's research seeks to understand the role of intangible resources such as knowledge, human capital, social capital, and relational resources (learning and knowledge through alliances and networks) on the firm’s strategic choice and competitive advantage. His research has examined the effects of inter-firm networks on firm innovation, firm competitive actions, knowledge acquisition and development, and international strategy. His research has been published in various prestigious journals, including Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, and Management International Review. His research has won awards from the Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Society, and Academy of Management. He has presented papers at various national and international conferences.

Dr. Gnyawali teaches strategic management, technology management, international management, and entrepreneurship. Before joining Virginia Tech in 1997, Dr. Gnyawali taught at the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University. He has taught classes to undergraduate, MBA, PMBA, EMBA, and Ph.D. students and has received award for Teaching Excellence. He has also taught in a distant learning environment through televised MBA courses and on-line courses. He also teaches in management and professional development programs. He has taken students to Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea) in summer programs. He has taken students to visit several world-class companies such as Toyota, Sony, Canon, Omron, GE, Disney, Boeing, Coca-Cola, Alcoa, Samsung, Hyundai, SK Telecom, LG, and POSCO and many cultural and historical sites.

Dr. Gnyawali has many years of international experience and has traveled extensively. He has managed business consulting service organizations, and served as a consultant for government and non-government organizations in several countries including Germany, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malawi, and Nepal. He has helped several organizations to plan and implement entrepreneurship development programs and trained trainers and entrepreneurs worldwide. He has also trained and consulted on various aspects of strategic management.

Dr. Gnyawali is a member of the Editorial Board of the Academy of Management Review and the Journal of Management. Additionally, he serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for several prestigious journals including Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, and Journal of Management Studies. He also reviews papers for national meetings of the Academy of Management and has received Outstanding Reviewer Award. At Virginia Tech, Dr. Gnyawali has served on several committees such as the International Programs Committee, East Asia Group, and Commission on Outreach and International Affairs. He also served on the Membership Committee of the Academy of Management for five years.
